CHTHONIC - BU-TIK / Spinefarm Record 2013

« Supreme Pain for The Tyran » est puissant.

Dear friends, today we’re going to travel! The emblem of the Taiwanese black metal scene CHTHONIC is not very mediated in our country. But it doesn’t matter; they toured with Arch Enemy in the US and currently through Europe with Satyricon. SO now I’m glad to introduce to you their latest album, “Bu-Tik”, because it has to be known.

The record begins with the introduction “Arising Armament”, entirely orchestral. We could hear a lot of percussions and a violin with this melody which sounds clearly Asian.
Instrumental beginning just before the blasting off riff, “Supreme Pain for The Tyran” is powerful. Freddy Lim sings actually in a black metal register, high and low which gives more possibilities. The riff goes with a wonderful orchestration; this is a good song to start the album.
We go on with the excellent “Sail into the Sunset Fire” and his hyper efficient riff. Orchestrations are still there, and I hear the great job of Dani on the drum for the powerful break! “Depths abysmal speak infernal”! The refrain is stirring and very appreciable in live!
Next Republic” is more direct, with a refrain sung in choirs and the great Jesse’s solo with sounds very heavy!
Another classical instrument starts “Rage of my Sword” just before the drum blast beatsand a scream come into play. The song pulses very fast and the title suits well: you can really feel the rage!
Between Silence and Death”, as “Next Republic” is more direct, the orchestration are less put forward, but we have a pure moment of death melodic metal that slaps you in the face with a very good break! Another great song: “Resurrection Pyre”. Very enraged, with a powerful verse associated to a slighter refrain, the contrast is good and interesting.
Now this is “Set Fire to the Island”, with a loud and brutal verse face a chorus full of traditional choirs, but the impact is less strong, but it’s still a good song.
This is the first extract of the album (there are three in total) with a great video clip: “Defenders of Bu-Tik Palace”. A catchy and devastating riff, energy, a fascinating keyboard melody, awesome!
It all ends with “Undying Armament” which is the continuation and the ending of the introduction. The circle is complete.

Here it is! Now you know the band! CHTHONIC and its traditional symphonic black metal also uses death melodic metal skills, but they are able to mix it with a great alchemy! Musically and humanely this band has to be discovered!
In the booklet the band explains the parts of its country history that pushed them in writing these lyrics. Big Bravo! See you on the road!
